The Department of Medicine at Kern Medical Center is a UCLA affiliated teaching service with academic faculty from the UCLA School of Medicine and the resident staff are post-graduate students at UCLA. The goal of the Department of Medicine first and foremost is excellence in patient care. Followed closely by goals of excellence in the education of medical students, post-graduate residents, and attending physicians.
The Department of Medicine services include: intensive/critical care, hospital care on medical/surgical services, and ambulatory care. Complete cardiac services are available except for interventional cardiology. Full service pulmonary care is available including, ventilator support, critical care medicine, bronchoscopic evaluations, pulmonary function laboratory evaluation, and the inpatient/outpatient pulmonary care. Renal/Nephrology services are available for acute dialysis, however, no chronic dialysis is available at Kern Medical Center. Infectious Disease services include: consultative infectious disease on both inpatient and outpatient basis, tuberculosis care, coccidioidomycosis care, clinical immunology, and HIV care. Gastroenterology services include: inpatient and outpatient endoscopic laboratory procedures, a gastroenterology clinic, and a limited service hepatology clinic. Oncology services are available on both and inpatient and outpatient basis.
Care of diabetics both with critical inpatient problems and on the ambulatory basis is a major thrust of the Diabetes Clinic and also the General Internal Medicine Clinic. Endocrinology consultative services are also available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
Inpatient and outpatient neurologic consultation is available as well as neuro-electro diagnostic studies such as electroencephalography and electromyography.
The General Internal Medicine Clinic is the largest and busiest clinic of the department, and is the entry point for most ambulatory patients to primary care and consultative services at Kern Medical Center. It is staffed with dedicated and experienced general internists who are capable in the broad range of internal medicine problems.
Somewhat more limited consultative services are available in Rheumatology, Dermatology, Geriatrics, Women's Health, and Podiatry.
