The Department of Pharmacy at Kern Medical Center offers a full range of pharmacotherapy services through the inpatient pharmacy, two outpatient pharmacies, home infusion pharmacy and clinical pharmacy services. The goal of the Department of Pharmacy is first and foremost to provide our patients excellent care through pharmacotherapy. It is the desire to accomplish this primary goal that drives our department.
We currently have 5 residency trained and 2 Board Certified clinical pharmacists who are dedicated to provide clinical services for critical care, medicine-surgical, oncology, psychiatry, ambulatory care clinics, and maternal/child areas. In the area of ambulatory care, our clinical pharmacists have full prescribing privileges under physician driven protocols in the areas of Hypertension, Diabetes, Anticoagulation, Smoking Cessation, Psychiatry and Pharmacotherapy. In addition to our clinical pharmacists we have 8 staff pharmacists who are the backbone of our department and ensure that each patient receives appropriate pharmacotherapy in a timely manner. We see over 5000 patients in our ambulatory care clinics, process >1 million inpatient orders and dispense >200,000 outpatient prescriptions per year.
In line with our goal of providing excellent care through pharmacotherapy a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency was started on July of 2005. Every year we graduate 2 pharmacy residents who are equipped with the knowledge and experience needed to serve patients and move the profession forward by being leaders in the field.
As we graduate and hire more and more residency trained pharmacists, the face and focus of our department continues to change. As a result, we are in the process of decentralizing our department and placing our residency trained staff pharmacists on the floors where they can be more available to answer clinical consults and provide direct patient care. We currently have fully operable decentralized stations in Pediatrics, ICU/DOU and 2 on the General Medicine floors.
What allows us to decentralize our department and place pharmacists on the floors is our capable and driven pharmacists and our level of technology. Every order is scanned and all patient information, including labs, radiography and patient charts, are all available via computer from anywhere in the hospital.
