Transitional Year Program

Kern Medical Center's Transitional Year Program provides a broad range of excellent training experiences. Our program is designed to provide a balanced clinical experience across several disciplines and is therefore an ideal training site for any medical school graduate needing a first year of training, no matter what his or her categorical preference may be.

Each Transitional Year resident receives personalized attention from our faculty to help design a program and curriculum that will best serve his/her needs.

The transitional program consists of 6 residents who most commonly are planning categorical training in radiology, anesthesia, emergency medicine, ophthalmology, or physical medicine and rehabilitation.  The schedule is varied and meant to facilitate the preparation for one of these specialties, or to assist in the choice of a specific specialty if the resident is undecided.

The departments of Surgery and Medicine sponsor the program. Every department in the hospital, however, plays an integral role in the education and training of our residents.

By completion of the year of training, it is not expected that the resident will be fully trained to practice medicine; however, the program is designed to assist the resident in acquiring fundamental clinical skills by developing the following competencies:

  1. obtain a complete medical history
  2. perform a complete physical examination
  3. define a patient’s problems
  4. develop a rational plan for diagnosis, and
  5. Implement therapy based on the etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations of various diseases.

Rotation and teaching evaluations are completed monthly by the residents, using an electronic evaluation system.  Evaluations of the resident’s performance are done monthly by the staff on the rotation and are reviewed quarterly with the resident and the program director.
