Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology is staffed by three pathologists that are trained in highly respected pathology programs and board certified in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. All pathologists have extensive experience and/or fellowship training in surgical pathology/cytopathology. The Department processes more than 10,000 surgical, cytology and bone marrow specimens annually and oversees the reporting of an additional 5,000 cervical pap tests processed by a reference commercial laboratory. We employ stringent quality standards to ensure that specimens are appropriately analyzed and comprehensively reported. Our pathologists work closely with other staff physicians to promote high quality patient care. A close consultative alliance with UCLA Medical Center ensures access to a broad range of surgical pathology specialties, such as hematopathology, neuropathology, nephropathology and dermatopathology. A full range of specialized molecular, cytogenetic and immunohistochemical tests are further available through extensive network arrangements to ensure access to the most sophisticated diagnostic methods.

The Department is accredited by the College of American Pathologists with distinction and as of April 2005 is the only hospital to have CAP accreditation. The Department manages an active quality program that works to ensure exceptional service to the patients and physicians at KMC. This program includes consultations for and active monitoring of blood transfusions that reduce unnecessary transfusions and assure appropriate and effective transfusions. The pathologists also oversee an active clinical pathology management service that assures effective laboratory test management and diagnostic services. The department fully supports the training of new physicians from several medical schools and KMC's six accredited residency programs to ensure that these physicians are fully equipped to practice good laboratory medicine in their future careers. The pathologists and associates at KMC proudly work hard to maintain their role as Kern County's finest Clinical Laboratory and Pathology Service.
